During the Battle of Little Big Horn, Custer ordered his trumpeter, John Martin, to deliver a message to Capt. Benteen, to the south. Lt. Cooke knew Martin, of Italian descent, was not completely familiar with the English language, so he wrote out the note depicting Custer’s message.
“Bentee, Come On, Big Villiage,
Be Quick, Bring Packs.
P.S. Bring Pacs”
After delivering the message, Benteen had stopped to help Reno in his retreat back across the Little Big Horn River, and the rest of you might say its history.
