When the horseman wishes to rest his relationship with his horse he may employ the use of a pair of hobbles. Doing so limits the horse's choice of motion by keeping him more focused on his appetite and less on his natural urge for going. In this way, both rider and horse can retreat to their own worlds while keeping one foot in the stirrup and three on the ground.
